Our Location
With thriving arts communities and a significant Native population, the Native Arts & Cultures Foundation is proud to call the Pacific Northwest home.
The Portland area, with an airport that connects to all major destinations, is centrally located with easy access to Hawai`i, Alaska and all regions of the continental United States. The cost of living is reasonable and the national commute is manageable.
Choosing to house the Foundation’s offices within the 366-acre Fort Vancouver Historic Preserve was a significant choice. Over a thousand years ago, tribal groups resided on these lands and traded up and down the Columbia River. The area has passed through “many hands” since then, from the Hudson Bay Trading Company to the U.S. military to the city of Vancouver, Washington. The land holds the bones and memories of many, but most prominent and haunting, are the Native voices and cultural history. As a Native organization, we have put our stake back in the ground in this beautiful place.
“These gifts demonstrate strong tribal interest in creating a powerful funding engine for protecting and preserving Native art and culture—the very cornerstones of tribal sovereignty. A foundation of this nature will help reverse the long history of government suppression of Native culture done as part of the United States' assimilation program. Through gifts of this nature, Indian Country can direct its resources to protect what is closest to home to all Indian tribes—our own cultures."
