Native Arts and Cultures
On #NationalNonprofitDay we thank you for supporti On #NationalNonprofitDay we thank you for supporting the important work of Native Arts and Cultures Foundation as we uplift traditional and future Native artists.

Our work centers the belief that American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian artists and
culture bearers are leading powerful conversations through creative expression, bringing
valuable perspective to contemporary life, and inspiring healing across cultural divides. We are
excited to expand access to these perspectives through increasing visibility of Native creativity
at our new home in Portland, Oregon at the Center.

Donate today at the link in our bio to ensure we can continue this important mission.

The Native Arts and Cultures Foundation (NACF) was The Native Arts and Cultures Foundation (NACF) was notified by ART on August 10 that the production of the Pueblo Revolt will not occur and has been suspended. We were the chosen venue and collaborator-in-space that ART had selected to work with to present Pueblo Revolt.

We are saddened to have received this news on the anniversary of the historic pueblo revolt, and we are concerned about how this impacts Native theater and the artists who make it happen. Our hearts go out to playwright, Dillon Chitto, the actors and those involved in the production.

We also recognize that these are difficult times for Arts organizations and we empathize with ART and what they are going through. We appreciate that ART has a strong history in Portland of presenting good work and supporting diverse voices.

At the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation we remain committed to the work of supporting and uplifting Native art including Native theater and playwrights.
"At the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation, our h "At the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation, our hearts are heavy with the news of the lives that have been lost and the devastating wildfires that have destroyed Lahaina town in Maui.

Lahaina is special to so many people for many reasons. As a Kānaka ʻŌiwi or Native Hawaiian, I grieve the destruction of this sacred place that has significance for Native peoples.

Many of you have reached out to us asking how you can help and where you can donate. I have reached out to colleagues who are part of organizations in philanthropy, nonprofits who do emergency aid work, and community based organizations. There are numerous organizations who can help and the following is not an exhaustive list, but we just wanted to get this out.

We are always saddened when people take advantage of fundraising during emergencies and disasters such as this one, so you can be assured that the following organizations and efforts are some of the best and legitimate.

We especially send our aloha and deepest sympathies to all those who have been impacted by this tradgedy."

We are excited to invite you all to join us at the We are excited to invite you all to join us at the Center for Native Arts and Cultures on Saturday, July 29th for a presentation by 2022 LIFT Awardee Lehuauakea of their traditional kapa kite recreation!

This community event is the culmination of Lehuauakea’s LIFT grant project, and will include music, entertainment, food and craft vendors.

Lehuauakea (@_lehuauakea_ ) is a māhū mixed-Native Hawaiian interdisciplinary artist and kapa maker from Pāpaʻikou on Moku O Keawe, the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. Through a range of traditional Kanaka Maoli craft-based media, their art addresses cultural and biological ecologies, Indigenous identity, and contemporary environmental degradation.

Lehuauakea’s LIFT project, E Hoʻāla Ka Lupe: To Awaken the Kite, is a project dedicated to the revival and recreation of traditional Native Hawaiian kites, or lupe. Addressing the overwhelming absence of information and limited old samples of Hawaiian kites, the project aims to begin bringing this craft practice back to Kanaka Maoli people using traditional construction methods and materials, including kapa (bark cloth), gathered fiber for cordage, and natural pigments.

This event is in collaboration with KALO Hawaiian Civic Club (@kalohcc), Lehuauakea and the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation.

What: E Hoʻāla Ka Lupe: To Awaken the Kite

When: Saturday, July 29th, 9am - 1pm

Where: the Center for Native Arts and Cultures
800 SE 10th Avenue, Portland, OR 97214
