The Native American Health Center provides the five-county Bay area Native community with healthcare to maintain and build physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual well-being while respecting their unique cultural traditions.

The center’s Indigenous in Oakland: Health and Wellness Mural project provided Native youth with after school mentorship by mural artist Daniel Rodriguez. During this project they created four murals for the NAHC building. While attending healthy lifestyle training, the muralists created and painted the murals with thematic elements from the history of relocation, Native activism and the occupation of Alcatraz.

The project promoted leadership and project management skills that empowered the attending youth. The various elements of the project were designed to promote physical health and cultural well-being with the intention of reducing potential suicide and Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) risk.
