Join us for "Matrilineal Memory," a solo exhibition by 2023 LIFT artist @mama0mouse Mikaela Shafer (Hopi, Coyote Clan) at the Center for Native Arts & Cultures in Portland!

This exhibition is an immersive exploration of memory and emotion featuring paintings, poetry, and installations that delve into the depths of Shafer’s Hopi heritage. Through Shafer’s innovative use of collagraph, dyeing, sewing, and layering techniques, she infuses her artworks with rich textures and intricate patterns, often incorporating a mix of organic materials.

We're big fans of NDN Girls Book Club (@ndngirlsbookclub) and in April they're partnering with @4kinship @abalonemountainpress and Cellular One to bring an incredible four stop literary journey to the Navajo Nation!

"Yiłta!, means "I read it!" in Diné Bizaad (the Navajo Language), aims to increase literacy and literary opportunities for Navajo (Diné) people, promote intergenerational storytelling, and language conservation."

Their goal is to give out 10,000 books across Navajo and they need your help! Spread the word, donate (links in their bio, Venmo, email about in-kind donations), tag big name publishers and companies, tag your favorite organizations — let’s do this!

The Native Arts & Cultures Foundation (NACF) mourns the loss of N. Scott Momaday (Kiowa), a beacon of Native American storytelling that illuminated the hearts and minds of readers around the world. With profound sadness, we bid farewell to this extraordinary wordsmith, whose legacy will forever grace the archives of literary history.

In tribute to his remarkable life and contributions, we invite you to remember N. Scott Momaday not only through his written works but also through the rich tapestry of his spoken word. In a poignant radio interview from June 2022, Momaday shared his insights and experiences with Andrea R. H A N L E Y, Vice President of Programs at NACF, on Nativescape, KSFR FM.

As we mourn the loss of N. Scott Momaday, let us also celebrate his life and legacy by embracing the stories he left behind. N. Scott Momaday's spirit will forever linger in the pages of his works and the hearts of those who cherish the power of storytelling to unite and inspire.

This weekend Harry Fonseca’s (Nisenan Maidu/ Por

This weekend Harry Fonseca’s (Nisenan Maidu/ Portuguese/Hawaiian, 1946-2006) works are being exhibited at Frieze Los Angeles, global arts fair. The Babst Gallery is showing six of his iconic pieces.

Today, Native Arts & Cultures Foundation President/CEO Shyla Spicer, Vice President of Programs Andrea R. H A N L E Y, and Director of Development Katy Hilton got a chance to see the collection on opening day.

Harry Fonseca was born and raised in Sacramento and was an enrolled citizen of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians. He was influenced by the Maidu origin stories told to him by his uncle and Maidu Elder, Henry Azbill. In 1990, he moved to Santa Fe, where he lived until his death in 2006.

The art fair is open to the public Saturday, March 2: 11am – 7pm & Sunday, March 3: 11am – 6pm at the Santa Monica Airport. The fair is located in the Southeast corner of the airfield. Babst Gallery is at Stand F7.
