Language Arts and Culture Movement – Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs

Grantee:  Culture, Language & Identity Project within the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs
Location:  Warm Springs, Oregon
Award:  2018 Native Nation Partnerships
Social Art Project:  Language Arts and Culture Movement
Web Site:  warmsprings-nsn.gov

The Language Arts and Culture Movement of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs will consist of acknowledging the last Ichishkín (Sahaptin) speakers of four dialects to produce works of art that inspire a sense of Native-Nation identity. Community members, primarily youth, will develop relationships with community artists and elders to experience and create visual arts, literacy, music or dance that incorporate the Ichishkín language. The project‘s goal is to stimulate thought and awareness about language loss among the Yakima, Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and Umatilla — who speak dialects of Ichishkín — while also working to educate Oregonians about Oregon Native identity.
