Connecting with Native Theater Arts in March 🎭

This March the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation (NACF) staff had the opportunity to see Native plays and connect with some of the incredibly talented performers.

First we had the pleasure of visiting with of some of the amazing actors and the director of the production of Where We Belong, at Portland Center Stage.

Actor(s) Jessica Ranville (Manitoba Métis), Jen Olivares (Acjachemem/Juaneño Band of Mission Indians), Director Mei Ann Teo, PCS Associate Artistic Director Chip Miller and community production advocate Kenny Ramos (Kumeyaay) joined us for a tour of the Center for Native Arts and Culture (CNAC) with NACF staff imagining the possibilities of Native theater and arts in this space.

Where We Belong by Madeline Sayet (Mohegan) is about an Indigenous theater-maker’s journey across geographic borders, personal history and cultural legacies in search of a place to belong. This production is currently showing through March 26th at Portland Center Stage at the Armory.

Complimentary tickets to this production are available to all Native people and can be reserved by contacting the PCS Box Office at 503-445-3700 or boxoffice@pcs.org.

Following the visit to our building NACF was invited to Portland Center Stage at the Armory for an evening of great programming.

An Author Talk featuring NACF Artist Anthony Hudson (Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, Siletz) shared a little from their upcoming memoir. The night concluded with a showing of playwright Madeline Sayet’s (Mohegan Tribe in Connecticut) “Where We Belong,” directed by Mei Ann Teo.

Our gratitude to everyone at Portland Center Stage!

Next up was an NACF field trip! Staff traveled to Seattle for a showing of the 1491’s – Dallas Goldtooth, Sterlin Harjo, Migizi Pensoneau, Ryan RedCorn, and Bobby Wilson – play Between Two Knees at Seattle Repertory Theater directed by Eric Ting.

We are beyond thrilled that Between Two Knees is back on stage and that we had a chance to see it in all its glory!

Thanks to Assistant Director R. Réal Vargas Alanis for inviting us backstage to meet the ENTIRE Between Two Knees cast – thank you so much for taking the time to hang out and chat with all of us!

Between Two Knees will be at the Seattle Repertory Theater through March 26th, 2023.
